Marking Leather – a hands-on review of decorating leather in period
This is an introductory class aimed at beginners where we will review the various methods of decorating leather based on period evidence (early, high, and late medieval). We will cover styles, tools, materials, and preparation. Participants will have the opportunity to try some of the techniques themselves, and will be provided with a smallish workpiece of leather (and a selection of tools to share during the class). Participants are welcome to bring their own project to work with, and I will happily provide feedback or advice – but do keep in mind that more significant projects will certainly take more time than we have allotted.

Landscape Painting Hang Outs
I will set up some easels, some small canvases and have some oil paint to play with as we all try to up our landscape painting game. You can bring your own art materials or use mine. Drop ins and wander offs welcome. Students should bring a cover-up apron to protect clothes, water, sun screen, and bug spray.

16th Century Basque @ Red Bay Labrador
Our findings from when we investigated Red Bay artifacts and reports on the Basque Whalers who worked at whaling camps along Newfoundland and Labrador coasts during the Sixteenth Century with a focus on their clothing. This included the artifacts we had access to at Memorial University of Newfoundland, artifacts at the Red Bay site, interviews with the staff and previous investigators as well as access to a number of published and unpublished reports and articles from the Government of Canada.
This was stage one in working with Parks Canada on an accurate reproduction of Basque Whaler outfits for their interpreters.
Donations may be requested to defray printing costs.

What’s in a Name?
Find out what’s involved with documenting names in the SCA. We’ll talk about personal names, but also about branch names and household names, which work a bit differently. We’ll get into exciting topics such as bynames, patronymics, locatives, compatible language groups, how to find reliable sources (and what sources are not reliable)–everything you need to get started putting together a name that might have been used in period. This is a high-level overview, but Nika is happy to chat to participants afterwards about particular submissions.

A School of Chartres Lapdesk
Based on the 11th century statuary on the gates of the Chartres Cathedral, we will create a cedar lapdesk using easily accessible tools and materials.
Adnar can share tools for 4 folks, and has dust masks and safety glasses.

Table Banner Workshop – make and take
This two-part workshop will allow participants to have their very own table banners to proudly display at their next event or feast. A table banner is a small-version personal banner that sits on a table to indicate your presence at the event. Participants must bring a printout of their heraldry or images that may be used to create their personal banner design.
Session 1: Brief discussion on banner design, drafting the banner design and applying a resist (outline for the paint). The resist must dry and set before session 2.
Session 2: Joyfully apply the paint to the banner, discuss how to set the painted design, and ongoing care for your banner.
Participants should already have a good idea of their heraldry (arms or badge) before the first session, with printed designs to use in creating the banner.

1st class 1hr. *basic discussions about different types of feasts to plan, different layouts, period recipes vs modern takes, food “no no’s” (ie not period), questions to ask months before event, timing based on kitchen equipment and staff, budgets, shopping tips, food prep tricks, allergies/safety, plan/face setbacks and the day after.
2nd class 1 hr. * Together in one hour..Draw up a Rough food plan for a meal/feast of 100 people and present rough cost that meets a budget. (Recomended to have taken class #1)

Decorating With Heraldry
How can you use your heraldry to help make the dream just that little bit more period and picturesque? We will talk about and show you many various ways you can show off your Heraldic Emblazon (PictureP on your personal belongings including clothing, furniture, tools, weapons and even your pets and family members. We will then have each participant paint their own heraldry onto a small plate thaty can then take home, finish and use as feast gear.
**Participants MUST BRING a copy of their registered heraldry or badge that will fit within a 5″ – 5 1/2″ circle suitable to be traced onto a wooden plate (carbon paper will be available).

Making your First Leather Pouch

Making Mawata: processing cocoons to make silk hankies
Learn to process silk cocoons and then use them to make a stack of silk hankies for spinning. This is a fun activity. Be prepared to get your hands wet.

Pets In The Middle Ages
A look at companion animals – cats, dogs, birds, monkeys, etc – that were kept as pets. Who kept them? How were they treated? Were they all “working animals” or were some just companions? There will be a small handout, and also a discussion portion.

Metal Round Table
I’ve been really happy over the years to see blacksmithing and other metalsmithing really take off in our Kingdom. Yet I’ve also realized that we don’t really gather together to “talk shop”. So I’m calling out to all the metal smithgs out there – be you blacksmith, blaesmith, tinker or jeweler- whatever you do, if it involves metal shaping in anyway, come out to the roundtable and let’s talk and share what we do, what we hope for in the future, any questions or problems we may have. We have a diverse and thriving metal community in our Kingdom. Let’s come together and get to know each other.

16th Century Anatomy and Medicine
This class with start with an in-person lecture by a student of the great anatomist Vesalius. Comelearn why the mores and rules of the mid 16th century allowed dissection, and what new knowledge this great master disseminated. The last part of the class will include a discussion of the 16th century’s medicine from a modern perspective.

Make Your Own Early Icelandic Mittens
In this class I will teach how to pattern your own mittens using your hand as a template. This will be based on the Viking Age children’s mittens found at Akranes, Iceland. Please bring your own fabric. If you are going to use wool, and will need a liner for your comfort, plesae bring enough for that as well. I can supply needles, thread, and paper to make a take away pattern.

Simple Metal Stamping Drop-In & Orla’s Vigil
An easy, drop-in, metal stamping class and also Orla’s vigil. Visitors are encouraged to make a few pendants, one or two to take home and one to gift into a bigger decorative project.
Orla will be bringing all of her metal stamps and hanging out and helping folks make some easy and fun shiny stuff.

Tailoring Techiniques – Pad Stitching
All of the tailoring techniques used today were well developed by the end of our period of history. Fashions change, but the ways to manipulate and control fabric shapes have hardly altered. In this class we will explore the uses of pad stitching in shaping a fitted garment: How to do it, and how and why it works. Students will have the opportunity to work with shaping a collar, and to get a feel for the ways they can control and manipulate fabric with stitching. Materials provided.

Introduction to Irish Uncial Calligraphy
This early script was spread by wandering Irish monks, along with Irish art styles, all across the European continent. We will start with pencils and graph paper to master the basic shapes, and then hopefully move on to using ink. I will supply calligraphy markers and graph paper for the first 5 who sign up, but after than anyone can participate as much or as little as they wish if they bring their own supplies. We will only cover one of the minuscule forms and not any of the larger decorated letters.
