3 Piece Cutlery set – Part 1

You will learn to use an anvil, hammer, bellows, blower and tongs. We will use both coal and charcoal and learn techniques such as tapering, flattening, bending, twisting, heat treating (hardening and tempering) and selective cooling. Leather gloves, natural fibre clothing, safety glasses and closed toe shoes are required.

We have had many requests to do this class so we are accepting up to 6. If we get that many, people will have to share forge/anvil time depending on what stage of the project they are at. No more than 4 people should be working at the same time so there may be some standing around waiting or returning later.

The general plan is making the knife from 12 to 2:30 and tine from 2:30 to 5 on Saturday. Everyone needs to have a knife made by the end of the day Saturday so we can temper them in a toaster oven that night (attendance not required). Sunday we will work on the spoon (the hardest item to make) and people can work on their sets until the end of the day. We will buff/wax the sets up with an electric drill and brass wheel as they are finished.

Making a Cabochon

This is a hands-on class, in which, not only the stone, but all the materials needed, from start to finish, are supplied.

You will be provided with instruction on the process, and guidance on shaping, and finishing.

The goal of the class is that, after initial shaping, you are allowed to work at your own pace and, with my help, you end the event with a high gloss finished cabochon.
You will be working, throughout the event, with finer and finer grit sandpaper on your stone, but this process is one you can take with you; to other classes, or back to your own camp.
Your work on the stone, aiming for a high gloss finish, continues throughout the entire event, as I will make myself available for consultation, and aid in advancement, for most of each and every day, at my own campsite.

Because FOOL is always such an amazing event, filled with so many wonderful activities, I realize that some may not find the time during the weekend to arrive at the final, high gloss, finish the class is aiming for. Because of this, I am offering those participants who show they have worked on their cabochon, but just haven’t had the time to finish it, the opportunity to seek me out and reach the class goal at other camping events in the season.

  • Class length – 2 hrs on Saturday – personal consultation available afterwards all weekend

  • Instructor – Cesare Ambrogino di Salvazzi
