As mentioned on the home page, Eoforwic is the local Toronto group of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). Within the SCA, Eoforwic is a Canton of the Barony of Septentria in the Kingdom of Ealdormere.
Eoforwic has been around for over 50 years. It was formed in 1974 by some graduate students of medieval studies at the University of Toronto and was a student group at the university for the first several decades (although very quickly it was not only students). It is now an independent group that meets off-campus, although it still welcomes student members. You are welcome to read more about Eoforwic’s history.
Although officially, Eoforwic is a Canton of Septentria, unofficially Eoforwic likes to style itself a Royal City, citing a City Charter that was “discovered” about 30 years ago. Elections are held for Mayor and Sheriff and much fun is had by all. You can read more about Eoforwic history on the Eoforwic History Page.
In addition to the unofficial City offices of Mayor and Sheriff, the Canton also has officers, who report to Baronial and Kingdom superiors and keep things running smoothly. The Seneschal has overall responsibility for the group; the Exchequer is responsible for group finances; the Chatelaine helps new members; the Webminister is responsible for this website; the Marshalls ensure combat is safe, and the Pursuivant is responsible for helping people with heraldry (like picking a medieval name or coat of arms to represent them). Members of Eoforwic participate in a wide variety of activities, martial and peaceful. The SCA is sometimes described as “a hundred hobbies in a trenchcoat” and members practice many of them, from fighting with swords and shields, fencing, and archery to sewing and embroidery, calligraphy and illumination, cookery, music, and dance. Eoforwic holds meetings and fight practices every week. We are in the process of starting up archery practices, although right now they are more sporadic. We also host one or two events each year which bring in a wider group of SCA participants from all over. Eoforwic members also attend events hosted by other groups.
