Murder Melee in the Meadow XL

June 5–8th, 2025

Germania Park Campgrounds, 4221 Trinity Church Rd, Binbrook, ON L0R 1W0

Information

Murder Melee returns for another year of combat and camaraderie at Murder Melee in the Meadow XL!

Pitch your camp beside the beautiful Lake Niapenco, with forest and open clearings to provide both shade and sun. Take to the fields for heavy and rapier melees, or take aim at the archery and thrown weapons ranges.

Other planned activities include a lively mead social, bardic, Queen’s Tea, and a wide array of A&S classes! For our younger attendees, we’ll have the ever-popular piñata and tug-of-war.

So prepare your tents, pack your armour, and prepare for merriment with a little touch of friendly murder!

New to the SCA?

We’re always delighted to welcome newcomers! For more information on what to expect, please see the Frequently Asked Questions section on the Who We Are page.

Gather with other mead enthusiasts at The Tavern. Bring your own chalice and something to share! Nibbles welcome!

Contact L’honorable Seigneur Baudouin de Domrémy if you have questions.

Host: Ascelyn of Ben Dunfirth

Once a year we bards unearth our abandoned drafts, half-finished thoughts, and not-quite-there works to share and ask: “is this anything?” Half workshop and half purge, bring anything and everything bardic that you want to get over the finish line…or just get out of your system.

Saturday:

Hosted by: Marioun Golightly

These are informal workshops and social gatherings, a chance to spend time doing our art together.

Bring your own projects or make use of the provided materials which are now available from the scribal fund for education. Please encourage anyone interested to make use of the Scriptoriums as basic supplies will be provided. Watch for announcements, on the Scribal College Web Page and Facebook group, of which events those materials will be available.

  • Donations of tools or materials are welcomed.
  • There will be a donation bank at the Scriptorium if you wish to help the scribal fund.

We can all learn from one another so anyone of any skill level is welcome to share their knowledge and skills.

We will need volunteers: to arrange with autocrats for table space in well-lit areas ( preferably in open areas of events), to make sure scriptoriums are advertised on the event web page and Facebook events, and to take care of materials.

This is an opportunity to teach through in an informal setting. Please contact Mistress Marioun at kathygolightly1@aim.com if you would like to head up a Scriptorium at an event. You don’t have to be an expert, just willing to help.

Teacher: Domina Helena Katerina del Roero

Teacher: Ren Swiftwater

Class is restricted to 16 participants.

Cost: $10 or Honourarium

Join us for a hands-on workshop in the traditional art of Caribou tufting—a delicate and beautiful Indigenous craft that uses the soft hair of the caribou to create textured, raised designs. In this class, you’ll learn the techniques of shaping and stitching tufts into a unique, eye-catching pin you can wear with pride.

Caribou tufting originated with the Dene and Métis peoples in northern Canada, where caribou were essential to survival and cultural expression. More than just art, tufting is a way of honouring the land, the animal, and the knowledge passed down through generations.

For folx asking about the honorarium piece for my class: Traditional gifts vary by Indigenous culture, but some widely respected options include:

1. Tobacco (Loose or in a pouch) – Tobacco is one of the most common and meaningful gifts, especially for Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and those offering teachings or ceremonies. – It is typically given with both hands as a request or in gratitude for shared knowledge.

2. Cloth (Fabric) – Many Indigenous cultures use cloth in regalia, ceremonies, and gifting. Offering high-quality fabric (often red, blue, or other vibrant colors) is a sign of respect.

3. Food – Traditional foods like wild rice, maple syrup, berries, dried fish, or smoked meat are meaningful gifts. – If offering store-bought food, choose high-quality or culturally relevant items – can be relevant to YOUR persona as well (please, no peanuts)

4. Handmade or Culturally Significant Items – does not have to be indigenous culture, can be related to YOUR persona. – Blankets are also given as a gesture of warmth, protection, and care.

5. Bundles or Personal Gifts – Some people offer small medicine bundles containing sage, cedar, sweetgrass, or other sacred items. – A well-thought-out personal gift (like art, or a useful tool) can also be appreciated. The most important aspect is intention—gifts should be given with sincerity and respect.
